Reid 5036. An illustrated book with a wood engraved frontispiece illustration entitled: 'My brother or, the man of many friends.'
Lettered on the title-page: "My brother or, the man of many friends by an old author. London: Sampson, Low & Son, 47 Ludgate Hill, 1855."
With an ornate design on the front cover, in orange and blue, with an illustration of a Christmas tree at centre surrounded by a design of holly, ivy and mistletoe. The title is integrated with the cover design with the publisher and printer's details at the foot of the page.
The frontispiece illustration, Reid 4388, represents the title on two ornamental bands, and two vignettes, the lower one represents Martyn Bond seated at the head of a table at a dinner party, and surroundded by friends who drink to his health; the other shows him reclaimed, hiding his face in his sister Martha's lap and weeping while she, anticipating his death, invokes the blessings of heaven on his head.
With the printer's details at the end of the text: "London: Bradbury and Evans, printers, Whitefriars."
With two pages of advertisements for illustrated presentation books by Sampson, Low, Son & Co on the last two pages.
