Reid 5244. A book with engraved frontispiece and title-page illustrations entitled 'Letters of Abelard and Heloise with a particular account of their lives and misfortunes.' With a cardboard binding, lettered on the front cover:
"Letters of Abelard & Heloise, with Poems by Madan, Pope, Cawthorn & c. A new edition. London: Printed and sold by Dean and Munday, Threadneedle-Street, 1818.'
With the following illustrations:
1. Reid 5217. Frontispiece. With a quotation below: "I accompanied you with terror to the foot of the altar. I heard you pronounce those fatal words which separated you from all men." Abelard to Heloise, vide page 107.
2. Reid 5218. Vignette on the title-page: With the quotation "Oh! do not forget me. remember my Love, my fidelity, my constancy." Heloise to Abelard, vide page 89." The Interior of a nun's cell, where she is seated at a table; she has been writing to her lover, and now gazes at a crucifix and rests her head on her left hand.
With a second title-page without illustrations, lettered as before. A preface, letters and verses.
