Reid 4875. An edition of 'The Life and Actions of Alexander the Great.' A book with a wood engraved title-page illustration and map published by The Family Library. With a title-page illustration by George Cruikshank.
Bound in textile. Lettered on the front cover:
"The Family Library No. III (Classical Series No 1) Alexander the Great. Second edition corrected.
London; John Murray, Albemarle Street. MDCCCXXIX. Price five shillings. Bradbury and Evans, Printers, Whitefriars."
On the title-page: "The life and actions of Alexander the Great by the Rev John Williams, rector of the Edinburgh academy and vicar of Lampeter.
With an illustration (Reid 3604.) which represents the head of Alexander, his hair bound by a diadem, bearing the horns of Jupiter Ammon.
With a tailpiece, Reid 3605. Another coin with the head of Alexander.
Inscribed beneath the image: "Second Edition. London: John Murray, Albemarle Street, MDCCCXXIX."
On the verso, a five line quotation from Aristotle in Greek and at the foot of the page:
"Printed by C. Roworth, Bell-Yard, Temple Bar." with a map of the campaigns of Alexander in Europe folded into the book with the publisher's line below the map and "J&C Walker[?] sculp below."
