- Curator's comments
- There is a list of descriptions of the subjects inserted in the front of the album. This drawing is described as: "68. A Mandarins pleasure-boat - - - Vide the Costume of China."
Plate 24 (aquatint) in "The Costume of China" (published 1805; etched lettering under image: "London Published Dec.r 1:st 1799. by G Nicol. Pallmall."). This print is entitled "A Mandarin's travelling boat", and the boat depicted is more ornate and with more decorative features such as flags. Alexander equates a mandarin's barge with an English carriage, there function being to transport the mandarin from place to place in fulfilment of his public duties.
