- Curator's comments
- Based on a drawing by Mantegna in the BM (1860,0616.85), usually dated 1504/5, with an additional background showing the piazza of SS. Giovanni e Paolo in Venice with the equestrian statue of Colleoni by Verrocchio which was set up in 1496. Although Mocetto seems to have used the original drawing, the changes in the lettering imply that he did this without Mantegna's own involvement. See Giorgio Marini in 'Innocente e calunniato: Federico Zuccaro e le vedette d'artista', Uffizi 2009, p.238.
