- Curator's comments
- According to Milner, this drawing probably dates from 1777. With the addition of four figures it was engraved by W. Woolett for 'Antiquities of Great Britain', vol I, plate ix, published 1st January 1779, as an illustration to Thomas Percy's 1771 poem 'The Hermit of Warkworth'. See Barbara Milner, 'Thomas Hearne, 1744-1817: A catalogue of his watercolours and drawings in the British Museum', unpublished typescript (MA report for Courtauld Institute), 1983, no.10.
Four states of Woolett's print are in the Department: 1840,0808.164, 1849,0328.68, 1849,0328.69, and 1868,0808.3062.
