Stuarts Koningliik Huis, door Rampen verdrukt en verheerliikt
(The royal house of Stuart, falling and reviving through adversity)
Description
Illustration from a broadside on the fortunes of the Stuart kings with an etching of Charles II flanked by James II and Henry Duke of Gloucester, James with drawn sword and Henry holding a baton; obelisks with busts of Charles I and Henrietta Maria in the background, each illustrated with scenes from Stuart history including the execution of Charles I; in the foreground, two putti, one weeping over an urn, the other as Hercules holding a shield with an image of a tree standing firm in a storm and the motto "Agitatus fortior" (stronger by adversity); in the centre, the royal coat of arms against a garland of thistles and roses. In a complete impression in the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam (Muller 2748) the image is surrounded by 16 compartments with illustrations of events concerning Charles II, Montrose and Monmouth, letterpress title in Dutch (as given above), text in four columns and publication line. (Amsterdam: ?1685) Etching

Curator's comments
Muller assumes that the broadside was published at the time of the death of Monmouth in July 1685. The impression in the Atlas Van Stolk also lacks text. The attribution to Romeyn de Hooghe is made on stylistic grounds.
