Illustration to Pierce Egan's Life in London, page 225. The rectangular pit is framed by spectators, some in a low gallery, and lit by candles from a central chandelier and rough sconces on posts supporting the gallery. 'Swells' and proletarians are crowded together. A bull-dog bites a chained monkey, whose master (1.) kneels behind it holding a sheet of iron between himself and the animal, lest it should bite him. The dog's master stands with hands on thighs. The monkey vanquishes all the dogs..
