Reid 4816. "The Life of Napoleon Bonaparte" edited by WH Ireland published in four illustrated volumes.
Vol 1. Bound in card with a leather effect. The title and volume numbers lettered on the spine in gold. Hand-coloured, folded, engraved illustrations are bound with the text.
1. Reid 1185. Hand coloured, folded engraved illustration of "Napoleon Bonaparte on his Celebrated White Charger." Lettered beneath the image: "Engraved by Mr. George Cruikshank from the original drawn from nature by C.Vernet for the splendid French work entitled "Campaigns in Italy."
With the publisher's details at the foot of the page: "Published Nov.7 1823 by John Fairburn, Broadway, Ludgate Hill." (The original publication date and publisher's address are printed beneath of the illustrations.)
2. Title page with "The Life of Napoleon Bonaparte by W.H. Ireland Esq" in ornate lettering. Below "Member of the Atheneum of Science and Arts at Paris. In Four Volumes- Vol 1. With a wood engraved vignette on the title-page which represents a shield with the Napoleonic eagle at its centre beneath a crown and surrounded by Napoleonic regalia. In a smaller text below the image, "J&J Neele FC. 352. Strand" and in larger ornate lettering: "Napoleon Emperor of France. London. Printed for John Cumberland, 19 Ludgate Hill."
3. Reid 1186. "Napoleon at the Sanguinary Battle of the Bridge at Lodi." Lettered "engraved by Mr. George Cruikshank, from the original design of C. Vernet, executed at Paris by J. Duplessi-Bertaux". Published May 10, 1823.

AM Cohn, "George Cruikshank: A Catalogue Raisonné" (435). The illustrations are engraved by George Cruikshank after the work of French artists including Carle Vernet and Vivant Denon "executed" (engraved) at Paris by Duplesis-Berteaux. Originally published in 64 parts, sixteen to a volume, containing 27 plates.
