Reid 5019. A letterpress tracts with an etched frontispiece illustration entitled: 'The temperance offering' with a frontispiece illustration by George Cruikshank.
In a brown textile binding with a yellow wrapper lettered: "The temperance offering consisting of essays, tales and poetry, furnished gratuitously by eminent temperance writers. Published under the direction of the committee of the London Temperance League in connexion with the Bazaar held at the Surrey Zoological Gardens, August 4th and 5th, 1852. Edited by James Silk Buckingham Esq, President of the League. London: Published for the Committee of the London Temperance League by W. Tweedie, 337 Strand." The same text is repeated on the title-page and on the verso: "London: Richard Barrett, Printer, Mark Lane."
With an introduction by J.S. Buckingham dated July 20, 1852 and a table of contents.
The frontispiece illustration, Reid 2553, an illustration to the short story "The Backslider" by Mrs S.C. Hall represents Ellen Dwyer endeavouring to comfort her husband who is depressed by his thoughts of unworthiness, in having brought herself and her children to want. Lettered below the image: "Designed, etched and presented to the London Temperance League Bazaar Volume by G. ed Cruikshank."
