- Curator's comments
- After a composition by Raphael which was painted by Giulio Romano in the Bathroom of Cardinal Bibbiena in the Vatican. The print comes closer to a preparatory drawing in the Louvre (inv. 4035), variously attributed to Raphael or Giulio, than to the fresco itself. It is in reverse to the drawing and the painting.
This impression is first state original (1863.0725.1545) For the second state with Salamanca's address and the covering up of Pan's erect penis see (H,7.126). There is also a copy (H,2.80) with a snail lower right. The copy was described as such by Bartsch in his entry on the Marco Dente original.
