Illustrated book entitled, "Sunday in London." Bound in card. With the following illustrations mainly by George Cruikshank (see comments.)
1. Frontispiece Illustration, Reid 3764. (G.C. J. Thompson.) "People of condition" on a Sunday." A scene in Hyde Park, with a throng of fashionable strollers and carriages; the statue of Achilles in the background.
Lettered on the title-page: "Sunday in London. Illustrated in Fourteen Cuts, By George Cruikshank, and a few words by a friend of his, with a copy of Sir Andrew Agnew's Bill: "
Lettered below the title: "Why should the vulgar man, the lacquey be more virtuous than his lord?"
2. With a vignette illustration on the title-page. Reid 3772.(G.C. G.D.) A policeman ordering two female apple sellers and a child from the street, the two women carrying bushels of fruit.
3. Reid 3765. "The pay-table." (G.C. S. Williams) A poor man receiving his wages from his foreman, who sits at a table with a book open in his hands, the publican of the tavern leaning across to deduct the man's bar tab from his earnings, the poor man's wife and family seated to the left, drinkers carousing beyond; illustration to Wight's "Sunday in London."
4. Reid 3766. "The Sunday market." (B & W. sc) A crowded street-scene with two public houses on opposing pavements, a fish stall between them in the street and a butcher's shop behind; the poor people, mostly women, make purchases and gather by the public houses, small boys crowd the stall.
5. Reid 3767. "Marching to divine service." (G.C. Slader) The Guards marching through St. James' Park on their way to church, the band playing to the direction of the drum major, women and children observing and walking on either side of the regiment.
6. Reid 3768. "Cordial workings of the spirit."(G.C. Thomas Williams) Drunken revellers exiting a gin palace, some fighting and brawling, others lying in the streets, church-goers coming from St. Martin-in-the-Fields beyond.
7. Reid 3769. "Gin-temple turn-out at Church-time." (G.C. J. Thompson) Drunken revellers exiting a gin palace, one fallen on his face in the gutter, others in amorous embraces or leaning against the wall, a bulldog to the left.
8. Reid 3770. "The Servants within our gates." (G.C. Bonner sc) A nobleman's kitchen with the cook "concocting the condiments, and graduating the gravies" for a select dinner party.
9. Reid 3771. [Confectioner and Fishmonger.] At an area gate about to deliver fish and confectionery to and over-fed cook.
10. Reid 3772. Repeat of the vignette illustration on the title page.
11. Reid 3773. "Thou shalt do no manner of work. Thou nor thy cattle." (G. Ck Thomas Williams) A fashionable preacher leaving his carriage to enter the church, the beadle pushes a man back who wishes to pass at the same time.
12. Reid 3774. "Miserable sinners!" (G.C. Byfield) An assemblage of over-fed and fashionable dressed persons seated in carpeted and cushioned pews.
13. Reid 3775. "The knacker's drag." (G. Ck) Beneath the broad glare of the blessed sun." Two men are seated on their "obsecenity-laden" vehicle, which is loaded with a used up dead horse.
14. Reid 3776. (G.C. J. Jackson.) "Sunday soiree musicale." A fashionable party assembled at a concert; a black footman handing refreshments.
15. Reid 3777. "Sunday ruralizing." (G.C. Landells & Gray.) Family parties and young people passing brick -kilns on their way to Primrose Hill.
