Reid 4863. Number 1 of 3 volumes of an illustrated book of 316 pages entitled "Philosophy in Sport made Science in Earnest; being an attempt to illustrate the first principles of natural philosophy by the aid of popular toys and sports."
With the title and volume number printed on the first page. On the verso and eight line quotation from Cowper's Tirocinium and the printer's details at the foot of the page: "London: Printed by A & R Spottiswoode, New-Street-Square."
1. Reid 3507 With a vignette illustration on the title-page used for all volumes which represents a trap and ball; a kitten playing with the latter. G.C. on the trap.
Lettered beneath the illustration:
"In three volumes. Vol.1. London: Printed for Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown and Green, Paternoster-Row. 1827." The illustrations are printed as chapter headings and tailpieces throughout the text, described by W Reid as follows:
2. Reid 3508: "Head-piece to Chapter II. Vol 1." (G.C.) The alarm of the vicar, the Rev Peter Twaddleton, at the appearance of Dr Doseall when trying scientific experiements in Pigmore Lane.
3. Reid 3509. "Tailpiece to Chapter II." (S.S.) Boy's playthings. A kite stands in the centre on which there is a grotesque face.
4. Reid 3510. "Headpiece to Chapter III." G.C. S.W. The vicar, with Mr Seymour and his family experimenting at the village well on the velocity of falling bodies.
5. Reid 3511. "Slader." Skaters running against and upsetting each other, and thus illustrating the laws of motion.
6. Reid 3512. "Headpiece to Chapter VI." S.W. Mr. Seymour exemplifying the nature of elasticity by means of a ball of Indian rubber on which a portrait of the vicar is painted.
7. Reid 3513. "The Dancing Balls." Exhibiting an illustration of momentum (p. 173.)
8. Reid 3514. "The Figure that Dances on a Fountain." As exhibited by Mr. Seymour in the orchard.
9. Reid 3515. "Headpiece to Chapter VIII." Boys bowling hoops, illustrative of rotary motion.
10. Reid 3516. "Small diagram explaining the trick of the equestrian at Astley's Theatre, when throwing oranges in the air and catching them while a horse is in full gallop."
11. Reid 3517. "Small diagram of a man balancing swords, illustrating the laws of gravitation.
12. Reid 3518. "Tailpiece to Chapter VIII." Two boys walking on stilts; a third leaps with a long pole; in explanation of the laws of gravitation.
13. Reid 3519. "Headpiece to Chapter IX." A boy playing whip top, illustrative of rotary motion.
14. Reid 3520 "Small diagram showing boys playing at see-saw, illustrating principles of natural philosophy which bear on trivial acts of life.
15. Reid 3521. "Headpiece to Chapter X" The young Seymours and their new swng made subvervient to instruction, through its connection with the practice of oscillation.

- Description from GW Reid. "A Descriptive Catalogue of the Works of George Cruikshank."
According to Reid: "The after editions were published in one volume with the matter condensed, and with additional cuts while others are omitted; for instance, the one of Dr Doseall's unfortunate experiment. Reid's catalogue entries provide additional initials for other artists or print makers (possibly professional block cutters) where applicable. However, these additional producers of the image cannot be conclusively identified due to the small amount of information provided.
A catalogue of advertisements for New Works by Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown & Green dated July 1827 bound at the front of Volume 1 with some of the pages uncut.
