The variety of poses on the recto suggests that the artist was freely inventing on a single theme rather than thinking of a single composition. Two paintings appear to be based on the drawing - an altarpiece in the Santuario delle Sette Chiese in Monselice, Padua, and a 'St John the Baptist in the desert' in the University Museum of Art, Standford (S. Mason Rinaldi, 1984, nos. 164 and 295, figs. 460 and 544 respectively).
