- Curator's comments
- Published in 1828, this lithograph is part of a series titled 'Galerie Théâtrale' and devoted to the representation of theatrical life, back-stages and actors. Monnier was particularly close to this world because he had been an actor. See the complete series: 161*a 20.
The inscription 'Talma' refers to François-Joseph Talma (1763-1826), one of the most famous actors of his time. Probably, the actor represented in the lithograph is Talma. Immensely appreciated by critics and public, Talma became famous also for his approach to theatrical costumes. He was the first actor claiming that the historical figures had to be represented with their own costumes. Therefore, when playing 'Proculus' in the 'Brutus' by Voltaire, he dressed as a Roman, with gown, sandals and laurel wreath.
