- Curator's comments
- A study for 'Doge Sebastiano Venier's thanksgiving for the Victory at Lepanto' in the Sala del Collegio in the Palazzo Ducale, Venice (Pignatti, II, fig. 634), commissioned in the period between the election of Venier (1577) and his death in 1578. The lower half of the painting is substantially the same as the composition studied here, although with the substitution of Saint Justina rather than an allegorical figure of Venice in the centre. The figures in the upper part were substantially altered: with Christ, rather than Saint Mark, seated on clouds surrounded by angels and putti.
