- Although Daniel Ternois did not include this in his monograph on the artist's drawings the Scarisbrick provenance and the incising of the lines would indicate that it is a counterproof of a now lost study for the etching in the 'Grand Apôtres' series (Lieure 1297-1312; the relevant one is 1300 with two impressions, also from the Scarisbrick collection, in the BM, 1861,0713.199-200). The two Apostle black chalk studies for this series listed by Ternois in the Seligman collection, New York ('Jacques Callot: catalogue complet de son oeuvre dessiné', Paris, 1962, nos. 911 and 912, pp. 130) are in the reverse directions to the prints which would make sense that the artist took offsets to transfer the designs to the plate. The slightly darker shade of the black chalk of the keys indicate that they may have been added by the artist as an afterthought to the saint's left hand. Callot made additional small adjustments to the figure, such as to the detail of the fastening of his cloak, while working on the plate itself.
