Curator's comments
After the preparatory drawing in the Louvre, Paris, inv.no.20195 (Rooses 1530). The painting by Rubens is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, inv.no.527 (Rooses 1049). This drawing was issued as a coloured facsimile by the British Museum in 'Reproductions of Drawings by Old Masters in the British Museum', Part III, Published by the Trustees, in 1893 where it was number IV and described there as 'Peter Paul Rubens, Portrait of the Artist.' Lit.: M. Bénard, 'Cabinet de M. Paignon Dijonval', Paris, 1810, no. 1321, p. 65 (as Rubens)
