- Text from Pouncey & Gere 1962:
Inexplicably ignored by Berenson, d'Achiardi, Pallucchini, and Fischel and considered by Dussler to be a copy after Sebastiano.
We see no reason to doubt either of Mariette's statements. The drawing is a characteristic example of Sebastiano's style as a portrait-draughtsman and represents Antonio Salamanca, the engraver, publisher and bookseller (c. 1500-62). The engraved portrait of Salamanca by Beatrizet inscribed "antonivs Salamanca, orbis, et vrbis antiqvitatvm imitator" (B. xv, p. 243, 6; repr. 'Repertorium', xxxiii (1910), p. 403) is clearly of the same man at a later age.
