The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy, 1780 and engraved by Woolett; two versions by West are now in America and Canada. The Battle of La Hogue, fought in May 1692, was a decisive victory for the allied English and Dutch against France and, implicitly, against the efforts of James II to regain the throne of England.
