- Curator's comments
- Essick notes that this plate was used as a cover label in early issues of the book, and as a half-title in later issues (Essick 1991). The use of this plate as a half-title here therefore suggests that this copy of "Compositions from the Works Days and Theogony of Hesiod" is a later issue.
As well as producing this half-title or label, 'Jeffreys' (named in Longman's accounts) executed the lettering in the other plates in the book (Essick 1991).
"Compositions from the Works Days and Theogony of Hesiod" is a book of designs by John Flaxman (based on the works of Hesiod) which were engraved by William Blake. For commentary on the "Compositions" see 1860,0310.1.2.
