- A study for the hands of Saint John the Evanglelist in the painting sold at Christie's New York, 11 January 1995, lot 99 (F. Baldassarri, 1995, no. 31, pp. 63-5). This is from a series of octagonal paintings of the Evanglists painted by Dolci for his confessor (possibly Domenico Carpanti) and later acquired by Giovan Battista Galli (Baldassari, nos. 30-4). Two of these are now in private collections (Saint John and Mark) while the other two are in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu (Saint Matthew) and the Musée Municipal, Brest (Saint Philip).
Lit.: C. McCorquodale, 'Some Paintings and Drawings by Carlo Dolci in British Collections ', in "Kunst der Barock in der Toskana", Munich, pp. 319-20 (where incorrectly related to Pitti painting of Saint John); F. Baldassari, 'Carlo Dolci', Turin, 1995, under no. 31, p. 65, fig. 31a
