Ghezzi’s first inscription on 1749 states that the sitter is a Spanish Knight of Malta and Grand Prior of Navarra; the second part written later in 1751, states that he is currently a chamber master for the King of England.
The sitter is Antonio Escudero y Muro (1690-1771)

"In the service of king Philip V of Spain (1683-1700-1746), as commander in the Armada de Barlovento, charged with guarding Spanish ships and colonies in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. Captain-General of the Galleys and Grand Prior of Navarra of the Order of the Knights of St. John. Chief chamberlain 1751-1753 for James III, the Pretender, the Jacobite king-in-exile.
Pope Benedict XIV, wrote in a letter to Cardinal Pierre Guérin de Tencin, on April [21st] 1751: ‘n’a plus auprès de lui un certain vieillard anglais et protestant qui lui servait de majordome et qu’il lui a substitué le grand prieur de Navarre, chevalier de Malte, Espagnol, qui lui tiendra compagnie dans les églises à genoux tant qu’il voudra et qui ne le fatiguera pas beaucoup en carosse par ses contes; c’est un véritable ancien Espagnol par la dévotion et par la gravité’. Two years later the 25 July 1753 the Pope wrote: ‘Nous apprenons que le grand prieur de Navarra, chevalier de Malte, homme de mérite et qui servait de maître de chambre au roi d’Angleterre, a demandé son congé, ne pouvant plus supporter le despotisme de milord Lismore dans cette cour’. But then on 8 May 1754 : ‘Le grand prieur de Navarre, chevalier de Malte, ci-devant auprès du roi d’Angleterre qu’il quitta il y a quelques mois pour des querelles particulières, tenait de méchants discours sur le Grand Maître de son Ordre au sujet de ce qui se passe entre le roi des Deux-Siciles et la Religion. Nous lui avons dit à lui-même qu’il n’avait qu’à changer de langage ou de pays. Il a accepté ce dernier parti’.
