The portrait by George Patten (1801–65) is in the Royal Collection, Millar, 543, RCIN 404246. Prince is in the uniform of a General Officer of the Saxonian Light Infantry, wearing the ribbon and star of the Family Order of Saxe-Ernest and the star of the Portuguese Order of Christ. In January 1840 George Patten travelled to Gotha at Graves’s instigation to paint a portrait of the newly-betrothed Prince for engraving at the same time. While he was in Gotha he was appointed Portrait Painter in Ordinary to Prince Albert, effectively giving a stamp of authenticity to the portrait. It was admired in Gotha, but the Queen and Prince had some reservations. Charles Wagstaff’s mezzotint was completed in May 1840 and published in the Queen’s birthday.
