A dilapidated knacker's yard; with stables in which skeletally thin horses are confined; some lying in the yard, one slumped up against the wall of one of the sheds and another to the foreground; a horse lying in the centre of the courtyard as another, desperate with starvation, chews on its mane; to the foreground, pigs scavenging the carcass of a horse with bones and poultry cluttering the yard; to the left, a cart driving through the open arch, loaded with a dead horse and driven by two men, one of whom savagely whips the draught-horse; to the right, another man leaning against a wall and smoking a pipe, accompanied by his bulldog; second state
