- Curator's comments
- Nicholas Stogdon records fourth states, of which this is a third state impression ((i) was not known to Ganz):
(i) unfinished proof before letters; the Virgin's eye-sockets are rather dark, her hands seem to have no fingernails and the halos have no rays
(ii) finished, before all inscriptions.
(iii) lettered with the title, 'Isaiah Cap. 60. v. 3.' and 'Federicus Borocius Urb: pinx. // J. Smith Fec. 1704 // Ex collectione Sim: du Bois Londini // Sold by J. Smith at the Lyon and Crown in Russel-street Covent Garden'.
(iv) Christ's fifth finger shortened.
Other impressions: London BM Smith album III, p. 15; Chatsworth (3 impressions); Cambridge Fitzwilliam (ii); Haddington albums (ii); New York PL (Ganz states that this is the impression he illustrates and that it is from (i), but the illustration is clearly from a lettered state); Oxford Christ Church (ii); Amsterdam RPK
