The group of 58 prints was selected from the Italian prints of Heywood Hawkins's collection which Colnaghi had purchased en bloc, and given the first refusal to the BM. See Carpenter's report dated 20 January 1858. It may have previously belonged to Thomas Wilson: see his sale Sotheby's, 22.v.1832/part of lot 208, 2 in lot, 'Oliver (Peter) a Female reading, two impressions, one a proof' bt Colnaghi £0-13-6.
