- Curator's comments
- Copy with slight variations after Marcantonio Raimondi's engraving of the same subject, see 1857,0711.1. Marcantonio's original is part of a series of thirteen prints representing the Saviour and the twelve Apostles after those painted by Raphael in the Sala dei Palafrenieri in the Vatican in 1517. These designs were also replicated in fresco on the pilasters of the church of S. Vincenzo and Anastasio alle Tre Fontane in Rome and have been linked by Harprath to the designs used for the silver statuettes (now lost) commissioned between 1518-19 by Leo X for the altar of the Sistine Chapel.
