- (Description and comment from M.Dorothy George, 'Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires in the British Museum', VIII, 1947)
One of many invasion satires, see BMSat 10008, and the first of a series of imitation notes printed on thin paper, numbered from 1 to 25, relating to events from 1803 to c. 1812, and originally issued with the relevant date and the imprint: 'Sold by Luffman, 377, Strand, London'. The print described belongs to a set dated in pen 1818 or 1819 [BMSats 3, 5, 12, 13, 14 are dated 1819.] with Fores's imprint, the original date having been removed, and filled in in pen with (probably) the year of sale. Duncan's death, 4 Aug. 1804, leaves little doubt as to the original date. For others of the series see index, s.v. Imitation Bank Note. Earlier imitation notes are BMSats 7839, 8564.
