Curator's comments
This is one of a series of seven numbered plates showing whole length personifications of 'The Virtues' after Hendrik Goltzius (New Hollstein 491-497), placed in niches. For a complete set see 1857,0613.504-509. The first five plates are engraved by Jacob Matham (New Hollstein 146-149); plates 6 and 7 are by Jan Saenredam (Hollstein 45-46). The set was first published by Goltzius in Haarlem; then in Amsterdam by Claes Jansz Visscher (before 1652); and finally by Jochem Ottens. Seven preparatory drawings by Goltzius are in the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen, inv.no.KKS7314a (Reznicek 82-88).
