'An accidence, or gamut, of painting in oil. By Julius Caesar Ibbetson. Second edition. With a brief memoir of the author's life, and his portrait, engraved by R. Cooper, from a painting by J.R. Smith. Also, his method of preparing gumtion, for rendering every colour transparent; with other recipes, never before published' (London, Harvey & Darton) 1828 [first edition from 1803]; containing examples of colours including a whole-page with 20 different colours and hand-written label below 'Julius Ibbetson / colour patterns probably to place on ovals in his Painting in oil. The earliest copies were done by hand'; and 3 etchings by Ibbetson; one showing a monkey in clothes holding umbrellas and facing a pile of antiquities and other objects; the second plate dated 1799 and showing three cows and a sheep resting by a river; the last plate dated 1803 and titled 'To the manes of Gilbert Wakefield'. Together with frontispiece showing half-length portrait of Ibbetson holding a brush by Cooper after Smith. Including title-page with vignette showing a cow and painting objects including a palette and brushes, dedication to Lady Elizabeth Keith Lindsay, memoir of the author's life, introduction with tailpiece showing a monkey scrubbing the floor, with another monkey and pig with glasses below, appendix, and various blank pages at the end of the book. Bound in tan bookcloth, with gold lettering on spine.
