Twelve images consisting of various stages in drunken criminality; the first, a view of a welcoming ale-house, the frontage elegantly built with columns and a pediment with drunken statues, a great chandelier over the door; the second, sacks of grain and malt waiting to be turned into gin and beer; the third, fat and jolly brewers, fashionably dressed with large watch-chains and seals, some seated at a table, another standing with his hands in his waistcoat pockets; the fourth, porters and draymen engaged in transporting barrels of beer, one rolling a barrel into a cellar, another filling a large jug, a fat and jolly carter with a tankard watching beyond; the fifth, two ragged drunken paupers buying beer and gin from a publican and the proprietor of a gin shop; the sixth, a ferocious brawl, drunken men furiously beating their poor wives and children with fists and sticks in a frenzy of drunkenness; the seventh, the same drunkards beating two policemen to death, who have attempted to arrest them; the eighth, Henry Fitzroy MP presenting a Bill to the House of Commons intended to protect poor women from drunken husbands, the House beyond with grimaces and in attitudes of stupidity; the ninth, a magistrate in court sentencing a drunkard to prison, his battered wife fainting, two injured policemen standing by; the tenth, the assembled clergy consisting of bishops, vicars and curates looking down at a pile of corpses, beaten to death by drunkards; the eleventh, wig-blocks representing the licensing magistrates of the Board of Excise gathered round a table, a clerk writing to the right and a large board lettered 'Board of Excise for Granting Beer Licences.'; the twelth, the Cabinet gathered round a table in their robes of state, drinking port, a decanter on the table; illustrations to "The House that Jack Built" (1853)
