- The present engraving serves as the major evidence of locating the Master BxG in the Frankfurt area.
The print was probably intended as an "ex libris", rather than a matrimonial shield and was not commissioned until the 1480's.
According to Lehrs, the engraving is a copy of a lost drawing after the Housebook Master, whereas J. P. Filedt Kok believes it was probably designed by the monogrammist himself, cf. "Master b x g", in: The Dictionary of Art, ed. J. Turner (London: Macmillan, 1996), vol. 20, p. 792. Cf. also Alan Shetack, Fifteenth century engravings of Northern Europe, exh. cat. National Gallery of Art Washington D.C., no. 140.
The copper plate for this engraving was was discovered in 1856, when a large edition was printed.
