- Curator's comments
- Acc. to Merlo the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are dated 1525. BM has eight of the series of twenty-four Apocalypse woodcuts by Woensam. They are loose copies after Lemberger, who in his turn had based his designs on the Cranach series for Luther's December Testament of 1522.
See 'The Apocalypse and the Shape of Things to Come', exh. cat., BM, ed. Frances Carey, London 1999, p. 159, cat. 55.
