- Essick writes: "Acquired for the Museum on 9 February 1846 [sic. actually 1856] from R. H. Evans. This is the same date on which the Museum acquired from Evans "Albion Rose," impression 1A, and other Blake works sold at auction on 15 June 1846 from the collection of William Upcott. There is no "Chaucers Canterbury Pilgrims" listed in the Upcott sale catalogue, but it may have been included in any of several miscellaneous lots of unidentified prints". (Essick 1983).
NB Essick was misinformed. The print came from A E Evans, and had been lodged with Carpenter on 10 February 1855.
