- Curator's comments
- In the drawing on the recto, Bellini originally drew the head of the knight front-on and then he changed his mind and made him look down to the right. The drawing on the verso is a good example of the artist's attempt to make a design work over two pages when it was originally just the right-hand one. Almost certainly only the man's right foot was on the left-hand page but after he decided to fill the rest of the page with the cage he seems to have added, somewhat clumsily, the enclosure's doorway on the left of the right-hand page and adding ruled lines to indicate the back wall.
See 1855,0811.1 for a description of the volume.
