- Curator's comments
- Possibly a preparatory costume study for Gainsborough's oil portrait of the Countess of Howe at Kenwood, of 1763-1764, drawn from a studio model rather than the Countess herself (see: J. Hayes and L. Stainton, 'Gainsborough Drawings', exh. cat, Washington, Fort Worth and New Haven, 1983, no. 34; and A. French, ed., 'The Earl and Countess of Howe by Gainsborough: a bicentenary exhibition', Kenwood, 1988). Alternatively, the drawing may simply echo the pose of the painting, and is perhaps a study of the artist's daughter, Margaret (see: M. Rosenthal and M. Myrone, eds., 'Gainsborough', exh. cat., Tate Britain, 2002-2003, no.69).
