Curator's comments
Joseph Brennan (email Sept 2020) suggests that the location is Dawlish rather than Starcross: 'I think this is Dawlish. Starcross is almost flat. At Dawlish there was a turnpike road that came down a steep hill like this, before the railway was built in 1845. Peter Kay, "Exeter - Newton Abbot, a Railway History', p. 4.'
