- Description
-
Title page to a tract entitled "De Spaansche Carravaan", no. 32 in the series entitled "Esopus in Europa"; in the centre, an etching showing a Spaniard, with spectacles and a ruff, cowering beside his ass laden with baggage: a portrait of "his whore", a backgammon board, a close-stool, a guitar, a sword, a dagger, a chocolate pot. On the ground a tortoise is followed by a snail; a soldier-, or hermit-crab retreats into its shell. The Spaniard is shown again on a hilltop beyond, raising his arms in fear, his ass running away without baggage; a mounted knight in armour appears on the right; behind is a large fortress. 1702

- Curator's comments
- The tract likens Philip V to the boastful Spaniard in a fable who claims that he will stand up to any opponent, but falls from his horse at the first sight of the Pope's cavalier whom he has, in fact, no reason to fear.
