The original painting, executed as part of a series of eleven for Federico Gonzaga and his Room of the Caesars at the Palazzo Ducale in Mantua in 1537, was acquired by Louis XIV from Jabach in 1662, and is now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (Inv. 423).
