- Dutuit states that he had only seen a single impression of the first state in pure etching, but does not say where that impression might be. He adds that a counterproof of that first state is in the BM, and must refer to this impression. It is, however, unclear to me that this is not a counterproof of the ordinary state commonly found of this plate: it already has the burin rework in the sky at the top. The spot in the clouds to which Hollstein refers (wherever that might be) is not a secure state distinction. Of the two impressions in the BM, the only apparent difference is in the cleaning of the plate border. (AVG, January 2009)
