- Curator's comments
- The present engraving belongs to the so-called 'Otto Prints'; for this group see the commentary to Hind, A.IV.2 (1852-3-1-3).
The dancers are partly copied, in reverse, from a similar couple in the 'Planet Venus' print (Hind, A.III.5a.I); Brockhaus supposed that the present print might be that described as 'forma da cenboli, in foglio comune' in the Francesco Rosselli Inventory of 1525. Another version is in the Rothschild Collection (Louvre, Paris). For comments on the print see A. Wright, in exh. cat., London, National Gallery, 'Renaissance Florence. The Art of the 1470s', 1999-2000, no. 91. Also G. Van der Sman, 'Ghirlandaio y el renacimiento en Florencia', Madrid, Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, cat.no.33 (Spanish and English) where the print is attributed to Baldini.
This print was issued as a black and white facsimile by the British Museum in 'Prints and Drawings in the British Museum, Reproduced by Photographic Process', [First Series] Part I (Italian Prints), Published by the Trustees in 1882, where it was number XI and described there as 'Anonymous. Design for Plate - Cavalier and Lady Dancing, c.1450.'; (Shelfmark 245*.b.12).
