- Curator's comments
- (Comment from M.Dorothy George, 'Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires in the British Museum', VI, 1938)
The only element of caricature is a scowl and the sideways direction of the eyes to the right, denoting in the original attention to Alecto's inspiration.
A handbill [kept with this print] announces his "detestable and obnoxious character (dangerous to civil society)" and invites those who have doubts as to the character of the Memoirs to visit Ridgway 'who is authorised to shew them such [filthy] productions of the Governors, as [offend even Male modesty and] disgrace human nature."
................................................
The verso of the handbill is lettered in Gothic script, "To the Publick." and annotated by Sarah Banks, "1790" (see Y,5.25 for similar handbills and cards relating to BM Satires 7721 collected by Banks).
