- Curator's comments
- Zerner believes the original composition to be the work of Rosso Fiorentino. It is not known where this lunette-shaped composition was originally depicted. The way Fantuzzi transposed the design in a manner close to Primaticcio's is, according to Zerner, typical of the artist's production in the years 1544/45. Also see 'École de Fontainebleau', Paris 1972, cat. No.326. Jenkins states that the planar arrangement of the figures and their contorted poses are evocative of Rosso's designs. See Jenkins 2017.
