- Curator's comments
- One of thirty-two etchings modelled on Primaticcio's sketches after the antique, which he executed during his trips to Rome in the 1540s. Two prints by Davent may also be associated with the series (LD.18 and 19). An offset on the verso of Davent's 'Polythmnia' (LD.31) in the MFA Boston (inv. 59.402) depicts a further unrecorded etching from the group.
It is difficult to know whether these etchings were conceived as a series. As Zerner has noted, the stylistic differences between some of the works suggest that they were executed over an extensive period of time, perhaps several years. Jenkins 2017.
