- The central female figure may represent the Nereid Amphitrite, wife of Neptune, or the sea nymph Galatea, often depicted in sea triumphs surrounded by 'amoretti', tritons and other marine creatures. The Gonzaga inventories indicate that paintings of aquatic triumphs were often displayed in pairs and therefore this composition might have formed a pendant with an image similar to Giulio's 'Triumph of Neptune' at Chatsworth (inv. 112). See Jenkins 2017 and also 'Giulio Romano pinxit et delineavit', Rome 1993, cat. 92. Massari there argues that the figure is of Venus rather than Galatea.
