- Curator's comments
- Presumably the lithographer is Antonio Marini, painter and restorer, who worked on the 'Giotto' frescoes in the Bargello chapel in 1840. This print was included in the 'Dante Rediscovered' exhibition in Grasmere in 2007, (see location details.) The following text is taken from the exhibition catalogue, no. 7, p. 79:
This portrait was part of a fresco uncovered in the Maddalena Chapel of the Bargello in Florence in 1840, and thought to be by Giotto. The face, softer and more youthful than other portrayals of the poet, was an important influence on the way the PreRaohaelites, in particular, viewed by Dante. The lithograph shows the fresco after its clumsy restoration, and overpainting, by Antonio Marini.
For a lithograph of the drawing before it was restored, see 1921,0415.1 (no.78 in the same exhibition).
