It is interesting that there are two figures included in the far left-hand distance of this interior view. This appears to link the Callcotts' interior view of the chapel with that published by the Arundel Society, as a chromolithograph, after a drawing by Mrs. Higford-Burr which depicts two figures identified as Dante and Giotto. As Matthew Plampin has argued, the inclusion of this chromolithograph in the Arundel Society publication of the Arena Chapel frescoes undermined the strict art-historical scholarship which John Ruskin (who was heavily involved in the project) tried to bring to bear on the figure of Giotto. Ruskin was keen to establish Giotto as an artistic figure and analyse his stylistic progression, and concomitantly wanted to move away from what he (Ruskin) saw as an over-reliance on the uncorroborated anecdotes and topoi attached to Giotto (such as a friendship with Dante) that had long been perpetuated by writers.
