For more information about the history and context of the "Description of the Chapel of the Annunziata dell'Arena; or, Giotto's Chapel in Padua", see the curatorial comment to 1850,1014.1028.1.
This illustration was specially highlighted in a later review of the Callcotts' publication, where the reviewer claimed "we know of nothing so simple which is more elevating" (The Athenaeum, August 2nd 1845, pp. 770-771). It appears that the "Description" was published publicly in 1845 (after the deaths of both Augustus and Maria Callcott), though only two known surviving copies (Boston Athenaeum and The Newberry, Chicago) evidence this.
