Curator's comments
Plate 4 from a set of six, see 1851,0208.109 for comment. The subject was long thought to be Perfidious Sinon in the camp of Trojans. For discussion of its correct subject see D. Cordellier, 'Luca Penni. Un disciple de Raphaël à Fontainebleau', Paris 2012, p.48. The original drawing for that scene is in the Louvre, Paris (inv.1397). The artist executed a further drawing of this subject, with many of the same compositional details (Louvre, inv. 1398). Jenkins 2017.
